Ever wondered what W-180 Cashews meant?

“Different people, offering cheaper price on cashews, how do I decide?”. If this question often pops up to confuse you, read on! You will understand different grades in white whole cashews and how to judge if you are getting a good deal.

The most sought-after quality on retail counters are the “White Whole Cashews”, also known as “Fancy Cashews”, where looks dictate a good nut! An easier analogy would be... the darker the chocolate the better, the lighter the cashew the better. Other varieties available on markets are scorched or blemished and valued lower!

Now, who would be content to make a choice based on just one characteristic! Especially, in a typical Indian scenario, where in an arranged marriage, many virtues like brought up, regionality, built are considered to see value for money when finding a groom.

White Whole Cashews are further valued based on their size grading:

The details that follow, show what different grades of “White Whole Cashews” are available in the market and what each of the grade designations mean.

Consider the example of W-180 or the “King of Cashew” like it is known in the market!

  • W – means While Whole Cashews
  • 180 – Is maximum count of wholes cashews per 1 Pound (454 grams) to qualify under this grading

For Indian context, it would mean about 400 whole cashews per 1 Kilogram, to qualify as W-180 grade of whole white cashews.

Understand White Whole Cashew Grading

These grades are further governed by acceptable tolerances and other aspects, like percentage of a lower grade cashew/broken or split cashew allowed (max of 5%), moisture level allowed (max of 5%). But for a retail customer, using grade by the count of cashews per kilogram would probably by itself, be a winner when taking a deal!

Lastly, for the same quality and grading, the price varies largely based on the location of purchase, and the quantities picked up. So, know well, that if you see a very low price being quoted in the market, that could indicate three possibilities, either the product is of lower grade or, the minimum order quantity would be high or, the worst case is that you are being cheated off your hard-earnd money.
